Get ready to be inspired! Learn to Earn Dayton is sharing exclusive stories from some of our members of the Summer + Afterschool Collaborative.

The story of Adventure Central begins with a visionary idea. Former Five Rivers MetroParks Executive Director Marvin Olinsky recognized a critical community need for enriching out-of-school and environmental programs for children. His vision came to life as Adventure Central, which has now been operating for over two decades. Today, the center provides free, year-round programs including homework assistance, leadership training, nature education, and summer camps. Unlike traditional community-based 4-H clubs, Adventure Central’s dedicated staff works closely with youth ages 5 to 18 almost daily. They seamlessly integrate nature exploration with life-skills development, civic duty, and social-emotional intelligence.

Adventure Central’s commitment to collaborative community growth is deeply rooted. The organization has been affiliated with the Summer + Afterschool Collaborative (SASC) and its related precursor, the City of Learners collaborative, since 2012. Since SASC officially launched in 2017, Adventure Central's leadership has actively participated in meetings, served on leadership committees, and continuously supported collaborative events, strengthening the network of youth support across the Dayton area.

Addressing Critical Community Needs

At the heart of Adventure Central is a unified belief that encouraging children to embrace new experiences—especially in the great outdoors—builds the life skills and confidence they need to become happier, healthier, and more productive members of their community.

The organization is uniquely qualified to turn these beliefs into lasting results by leveraging the passion, expertise, and resources of its core partners: Five Rivers MetroParks, Ohio State University Extension, and 4-H. Using nature as their primary classroom, a high-quality and diverse staff nurtures participants through life-changing activities that strengthen core values, build lifelong skills, and empower Dayton’s youth to explore their full potential.

A Day in the Life of an Adventure Central Camper

Summer days at Adventure Central are vibrant, fast-paced, and carefully designed to keep kids engaged. Campers are grouped by age and rotate through nature education, physical recreation, and community-building activities that make the most of the beautiful surroundings.

The morning kicks off with community connection as campers arrive, gather to recite the traditional 4-H pledge, and fuel up with a provided morning snack. From there, youth head outdoors into nature for immersive, hands-on activities like creeking, kayaking, hiking, and learning essential wildlife survival skills.

After working up an appetite, campers enjoy a daily provided lunch. They also step into newly upgraded teaching kitchens for interactive nutrition programs and hands-on cooking lessons. Afternoons spark curiosity with staff-led science and innovation activities, ranging from engaging chemistry experiments to collaborative garden projects. Finally, the action-packed day wraps up with high energy, ending with loud, traditional camp songs just before evening dismissal.

What Scholars Love and Moments That Matter

When you ask the scholars what they love most about Adventure Central, they point to the freedom of exploring nature, building leadership skills, and developing vital social-emotional coping skills. Tyler Kessler, a 4-H/Extension Educator III, notes that students especially love the positive reinforcement of self-pride, self-awareness, and the consistent practice of finding their unique voices early in life.

The magic of this environment is most obvious in the program's "grow your own" system. Adventure Central has cultivated a pipeline where students who once participated as young campers are encouraged to return as teen workers and camp counselors. A few have even joined the professional staff during their college years.

This full-circle leadership model is Adventure Central's greatest strength. Because these young leaders grew up in the program, they possess an innate understanding of daily routines and a deep, foundational passion for their community. The staff culture is defined by a motivation to learn and a genuine commitment to caring for the Adventure Central family, with a desire to recreate the same impactful childhood memories they enjoyed for the next generation. This beautiful cycle is further supported by active parent and community engagement.

Adventure Central continues to prove that when you invest in a child’s relationship with nature, self-awareness, and community, the positive ripple effects span generations.
